Regulations for exams and required marks

  • Rules have changed: 10/20 = pass; less = fail
  • General ULB teaching regulations (in French)
  • Every academic year has two exam sessions: the first in January and June, the second in August-September. If you don't pass in the first session, you must register for the second session. Registration for the 2nd session is NOT automatic! (If you fail to register, the administration will assume that you have given up for this year)
  • This holds ALSO if you only have to finish your thesis!!
  • The evaluation of courses STAT-F-426 and STAT-F-509, weekly seminars is different from classical courses. It is pass/fail. To pass, you need to attend at seminars. You may miss at most 3 seminars/year.

The master's thesis (MEMO-F-504)

A master's thesis can be:
  • An overview of a research domain, comparative literature study, a summary
  • An implementation of an existing statistical technique, or a comparison of several methods
  • A report of original research.
  • A combination of these thingsAttention: A research paper is NOT a thesis. If you have a nice report of original research, this MUST be situated within the domain: a thesis must be self-contained, and accessible to a general statistician.
A thesis should contain at least 50-60 pages, and at most apprx. 100.

Front page and some formal info.

When and how to start off
: the thesis has a second year's course identification number (MEMO-F-504). Nevertheless, as this is a major project of your second year, it is a good idea to check with one of the academics if he/she has appropriate subjects before the start of the second year. Try do find a promoter in June of the first year, and to have started when the academic year of your 2nd year starts. Failing to do so, may result in troubles finishing the thesis in due time. You have to fill in this document by Oct 15 the latest.

An internship instead of a thesis
: if you wish, you can go for an internship (stage) in a company. A few rules are:
  • You have to contact the companies yourself. Make sure to take action in due time. It generally takes more time to get a subject than with an academic on campus.
  • You must produce a substantial (both in quantity and in quality) report of your internship, describing the statistical contribution. This report must have the same size as a classical thesis.
  • The hosting company will provide a local advisor (maître de stage). We recommend to choose one of your professors as an academic advisor. In case you don't choose an academic advisor, (directeur de mémoire, promoter) then it will be by default the president of the jury. Note, however, that he does not take part in the literature study, experiments, writing, or other activities related to the internship.
